Nvidia is reportedly preparing to launch a new processor for consumer laptops in the first half of 2026, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The report states that Nvidia is developing a system-on-chip (SoC) that integrates a central processing unit (CPU), graphics processing unit (GPU), and neural processing unit (NPU) into a single package. Laptops powered by the chip could arrive from manufacturers such as Dell and Lenovo within months of the launch window, though neither company has confirmed product plans.
Nvidia and MediaTek Partner on Arm-Based SoC
The Wall Street Journal states that Nvidia is partnering with MediaTek to build the new processor. The chip will be based on the Arm architecture rather than the x86 architecture traditionally used by Intel and AMD.
The integrated design combines CPU, GPU, and NPU components into one SoC, similar to processors from Apple and Qualcomm. The reported chip names are N1 and N1X.
Unlike high-performance gaming laptops that rely on discrete Nvidia GeForce RTX GPUs, devices powered by this new SoC are expected to target thin?and?light designs with a focus on power efficiency and battery life.
Arm-based laptops from Qualcomm and Apple have demonstrated strong battery performance over the past year. Nvidia’s entry into this segment positions the company directly against Qualcomm, Apple, Intel, and AMD in the consumer laptop processor market.
Graphics Performance and Gaming Remain Key Questions
While Arm-based systems have improved in efficiency, graphics performance and software compatibility remain critical factors. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X series laptops, for example, have focused on battery life but have faced limitations in gaming performance and broader software compatibility compared to x86 systems.
Nvidia’s experience in graphics hardware and its developer relationships through the GeForce RTX ecosystem may influence how its Arm-based chip handles gaming loads. The report does not provide performance benchmarks or confirm gaming capabilities for the N1 and N1X chips.
Compatibility with Windows applications and games on Arm remains an evolving area, and Nvidia has not disclosed how its solution will address those constraints.
Nvidia Partnership With Intel for x86-Based Chip
In addition to the Arm-based project, The Wall Street Journal previously reported that Nvidia is partnering with Intel on an x86-based chip. That design would integrate an Intel CPU with Nvidia graphics and neural processing technology.
The goal of this chip would be to deliver improved graphics performance in thinner laptops without relying on GPU, potentially enabling lighter designs with better battery life than traditional gaming laptops.
Timing for the Intel-Nvidia chip has not been confirmed, and the report does not specify a launch window.
Nvidia Expands the Windows Laptop Processor Market
For decades, Windows laptops were primarily powered by Intel or AMD processors. Qualcomm entered the market with Arm-based Snapdragon X chips, and Nvidia’s planned launch would add another major competitor.
Dell and Lenovo did not immediately respond to requests for comment in the report.
Nvidia has not publicly announced the laptop processor. Specifications, pricing, and final product configurations still remain unconfirmed ahead of the reported first-half 2026 launch window.
